St. James, Callicoon, NY Susan’s Party
There will be a party celebrating Susan Treanor's graduation from General
Seminary this coming Sunday, June 7, following the regular 10:30 service at St.
James. I know this is short notice, but conflicting dates has left us
jumping around from one day to another, with the 7th being the only available
date for those most involved. It
will be a pot luck lunch. I would appreciate your letting me know what you
plan to bring so that I can make sure all basics are covered. Are any
of you out there interested in providing a cake appropriate to the
occasion? Please let me know so that we don't have duplicates.
I don't suppose it would be tragic event if more than one Susan cake were
to appear, but it would be peculiar. + + +
Fun & Fund
Raising for St. James By Mary
Curtis
As is our custom, Memorial Day weekend was a big deal for the folks at
St. James. Not only was a good time
had by all who worked at the annual Country Fair, but we brought in the tidy sum
of $1,600 for the church,. About 25
parishioners, along with a couple of ringers from other denominations, donated
things to sell and worked at set up, sales, and take down. Kudos to event coordinator Darko
Hreljanovic. And More To
Come
St. James has two more fund raising events scheduled for this
summer.
Our first annual Book Fair will be held on the 4th of July, 10
a.m. until 4 p.m. at the usual Fair site (Mary’s front lawn). We’re featuring “hard cover and books of
quality.” That means no paperbacks
unless they are large format and extra special. Do you have books to donate? Drop them off at Mary’s – in the house
rather than the garage, which can be damp and damaging to books. Would you like
to help out the day of the Book Fair – and possibly find the books you want to
take home before the day’s customers have made off with the best of the
best? Let either Darko or Mary know
if you can help. And don’t for get our Second Annual Auction,
scheduled for Saturday, August 22, at the same site as the Country Fair and the
Book Fair. If you have donations of
a higher quality than we sell at the Fair and Yard Sale, now is the time to
bring them out and drop them off at the auction site.

Meeting Bishop Roskum
By Mary Curtis
Fourteen St. James parishioners traveled to South Fallsburg on April 19 to meet Bishop Roskum and witness the welcoming of four new members for St. James. Cliff and Conio Loretto were confirmed. Cliff’s parents, Gloria and Cliff Schlosser, were received into the Episcopal church. And little Gracie received her first communion. Gracie’s birth mother and grandmother were among those witnessing the event.
Hospitality of the St. Andrew’s congregation was warm, and the lunch excellent.
Bishop Roskum announced that she will be dusting off her acting credentials for an appearance at our Murder Mystery Party, when she visits St. James on the first weekend in October.

Cream Tea Success
By Mary Curtis
The Cream Tea at St. James on April 25 was a resounding success. Profits came close to the $400 mark, besting last year take by over $100. A number of Red Hat ladies swelled the numbers. The tea sipping, delicacy munching and good conversation were enjoyed at leisure. Girls from the Family School waited on table and other parishioners worked behind the scenes. Nellie Burnham chaired the event,

I want to thank all who worked, donated or loaned things for the English Cream Tea. It was the most successful one yet and you all helped to make it that. We made $393.50. Thank you.

Savings Booklet
by Mary Curtis
The booklet sharing parishioners’ ideas on how to save money in these trying times is coming along well. If you have any hints you haven’t yet shared, please send them along to me (mcurtis2@hvc.rr.com ) as soon as possible. I’d particularly like to find out more about saving money by using the internet. All information needs to be in my hands by May 15, in order for me to print the booklets in time to distribute to customers at the Spring Fair.

It’s May & It’s Fair
by Mary Curtis
Yes, it’s that time of year when we get ready for the St. James Spring Fair. Sited on my front lawn, it will be held on Memorial Day weekend, and is our biggest fund raiser of the year. Darko Hreljanovic is in charge.
My garage is now open for business. That means that I will leave the garage door open every day between now and May 23, from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. If I am not around when you come by, there will be a sign telling you where to place your things so that we don’t mix priced with non-priced, sorted and unsorted. Speaking of pricing, if possible, please put prices on your items. No item should be priced lower than 25 cents. I can provide stickers and tags. Unless Darko or yours truly specifically says okay, we cannot accept clothing, upholstered furniture, or electronics such as computers. All items should be clean and in good condition.
Because our first annual Book Fair is planned for the 4th of July, we will only be selling paperbacks at the Spring Fair. If you must bring all of your books now, be sure that you separate out paperbacks from hard covers, and so mark the boxes or bags.
Between now and the Fair, much carrying down of boxes from the attics, sorting and pricing of donations, cleaning and moving about, etc. has to happen. If I try to do it all by myself – which I’m tempted to do when I see it sitting there – I get tired and crabby. To protect us all from my hitzy fits, please come by and help.
Fred Howard will soon be calling you, soliciting for the bake sale that is part of the Fair. Wrap baked goods in clear plastic and label them. Drop baked good off at my house on either Friday, May 22, or the morning of the Fair.
On the Saturday before Fair Day (May 16) beginning at 10:30, we’ll set up the tents and bring up tables from the church. I’ll provide lunch for the volunteers.
Fair days are May 23 & 24. On the 23rd, we’ll be officiallyh open for business from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Workers need to be on hand by 8:30 to put out the items for sale. It’s the biggest job of the event, and we need all the help we can get. We also need sales help for both days. On the Sunday, grab something to eat at coffee hour and make your way up to the Fair site for our Clearance Sale (beginning about 12:30). Final take down is usually about 3:30, and that’s where we need fresh troops. Those of us who have been working for a couple of days nonstop will be exhausted. If you can only work at one time during the weekend, that is when we need you – to sort out and box items for the auction and for next year’s Fair – to take down tables and tents – to remove boxes and tables and tents to the garage attic and the church.
I know it’s a lot of work. But it is profitable. And we do have fun.
NEWS FROM ST. ANDREW’S
By Peggy Friedman
April was a busy month for St. Andrew’s in South Fallsburg. On Sunday, April 19 at 10:30 am, we were delighted to welcome Bishop Catherine S. Roskam for her pastoral visitation. Congregants of St. James Callicoon joined us for this joyful occasion. Bishop Roskam’s moving sermon considered the essentialness of Christian faith and at the same time the room for doubt that the Episcopal Church offers. The service continued with her reception of Cliff and Gloria Schlosser into the Episcopal Church and confirmation of Cliff and Conio Loretto. Mother Joan LaLiberté was the assisting priest, and Linda Goldstein was the bishop’s chaplain.
After the well-attended service, participants repaired to the church’s community room and enjoyed a communal luncheon, featuring varieties of delicious foods made by the parishioners of both churches. The fellowship was poignant for some at St. Andrew’s because of the recent notification of withdrawal of diocesan support, and the uncertainty of the church’s future. St. James and St. Andrew’s will undoubtedly be considering jointly the necessary steps to take to assure the continuance of both parishes.
St. Andrew’s has two important out-reach activities: a twice-monthly food pantry, and a bi-annual concert series. On April 15, a string quartet and fortepianist David Oei performed music by W.A. Mozart, Erwin Schulhoff, and Bruce Adolphe for a large and enthusiastic audience. At the reception following, the musicians delayed their return to New York long enough to talk to music lovers and enjoy home-made cakes and cookies, a specialty of our membership.
In May our food pantry meets Friday May 8 and Friday May 22, 5-7 pm. We could use volunteers at that time, as well a volunteers to meet at the church during the day and help bag the food. Time is flexible. Call Peggy at 845-292-8967 if you can help us do the Lord’s work.
